What is the best way to promote my pub quiz?

I am running a pub quiz in Edinburgh and looking for a way to promote it. The pub is in a quiet area of town and they do not seem too bothered about trying to promote it at all. We do not get paid to run the quiz and therefore are looking for cost effective ways to promote it. We use myspace (http://www.myspace.com/johnandkennyspubq... and other online promotion but they do not really get people in. As we do not get paid we do not want to spend too much.

Friends are helping but if we do not see a significant up turn in custom I think the pub will call a halt to the quiz. Any ideas?

best way is posters in public places, and see if you can get a sandwhich stand saying "pub quiz here monday night" etc.

people generally only find what they are looking for on the net

Phone up your most popular radio station and ask if they'd be kind enough to mention that you have a pub quiz.

Make up flyers and pay some local kids to distribute them...under car windshields, mailboxes etc. Might be worth it to pay the kids, could mean more business for your pub.

answerers will be flocking to Edinburgh with printouts of your avatar asking do you know this man, where is his pub quiz

Having had experience with pub quizzes I would say don't make the questions too difficult but throw in the odd stinker or riddle to get people thinking. I know many people who will do a quiz once, find it too hard, and then never return. I have also seen plenty of quiz masters make up hard questions to try and make themselves look intelligent, it doesn't work and puts people off for life. This isn't an answer about how to promote it, but how to keep people once they're there.

Is your quiz for charity? if so then have you a local newspaper. ours usually put it in their paper for free for a charity, or your local radio station. if you can get some posters done on a computer, you could put them in your local shop windows. The library is a good place to put a poster
